WASHINGTON – Applications for U.S. unemployment compensation fell sharply last week, partly reversing a large spike earlier in April. The number of people who filed initial requests for jobless benefits fell by 44,000 to a seasonally adjusted 434,000 in the week ended May 7, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected applications to decline to 428,000 from an upwardly revised 478,000 in the prior week. Requests for unemployment benefits have jumped around in the past few months, making it hard to draw a clear picture of what’s happening in the U.S.

By Michael C. Bender, Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau Tuesday, May 3, 2011

TALLAHASSEE — Florida unemployment benefits would rise and fall along with the jobless rate and state businesses would get a tax break under a proposal approved Tuesday by the Florida Senate.

The bill, HB 7005, now moves back to the House, where leaders want to limit state benefits — already among the nation’s lowest and most difficult to receive — to no more than 20 weeks.

The Senate plan, approved on a party-line 29-10 vote, keeps the maximum benefit at 26 weeks. But it creates a sliding scale that would cut or add a week of unemployment benefits for every half-percent the unemployment rate dropped or climbed.

Under the Senate bill, Florida’s unemployment rate — 11.1 percent in March — would have to reach 12 percent to receive the full 26 weeks. Weekly benefits could drop down as low as …

SALEM – Oregon’s unemployment phone lines are completely jammed. Newly announced benefits have drawn tens of thousands of callers.

The state employment office says it’s sorry, but it just can’t handle the call volume all at once.

  Emergency Benefits link

The state notified 40,000 people who may be eligible for a newly approved extension of unemployment benefits.

Those people are calling in their claims in droves.

Though employees are working hour after hour to process the calls people are still frustrated because the phone lines seem perpetually busy.

“It was busy, busy, busy, busy for all day Monday half the day Tuesday,” said Kelly Cruikshank.

“We’re still overwhelmed with phone calls,” said Employmnet Department spokesman Tom Fuller. “So people are getting busy signals. I tried this morning and got a busy signal and it’s not the lines we had Verizon check out the phone lines. They’re operating okay. They’re just literally at over-capacity.”

The state says it’ll simply take longer to process the calls and the claims.

But it promises no one will lose money from this issue.

All eligible claims, said Fuller, will be back-dated to this week.

That may frustrate unemployed citizens who in cash flow crunch but it’s the best the state can do right now.
