New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Four orders of Roman Catholic nuns – which are all investors – sought a review of pay policy at Goldman Sachs.

The review was sought by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel after report came out that the five most senior Goldman Sachs executives got $69.5 million pay in 2010.

The challenge was made ahead of the bank’s yearly meeting in May.

The nuns also demanded for a summary review by Oct. 1. The review must include:

Evaluation if the senior officials’ pay packages are excessive and should be changed

Study of how sizeable layoffs and pay level of lowest-paid workers affect the senior executive compensation package, and

Analysis of impact of revenue fluctuation on compensation pool, top 25 senior executive and shareholders.

Although the nuns have been seeking clear information over the years on the high levels of executive compensation, Goldman Sachs has hisotoricaly successfully blocked their attempts and plans to reject the current challenge.

Goldman pointed out shareholders already have access to the information and the preparation of the report requested by the nuns would distract the bank’s compensation committee and entail extra cost.

Meanwhile, reports said that Julian Metherell, the head of Goldman Sach’s U.K. investment banking division, resigned effective summer. His quitting prompted speculations that Metherell will join an energy investment fund established by former British Petroleum Chief Executive Tony Hayward.

Metherell provided advice to large energy firms such as Centrica, Anglo American and BP. His departure from Goldman Sachs is expected to leave the investment bank shaken.

Tejinder Singh – AHN News Correspondent

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – The U.S. top diplomat invited all of her herd to Washington on Wednesday and asked top military man to address them in an effort to bring the two departments together while the incumbent to Egypt stayed back because of ongoing crisis.

Introducing Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the audience of nearly 200 American diplomats from around the world, Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State said, “We are really fortunate today to have someone who really understands what civilian power means,” adding, “He is someone who grasps in a very deep and profound way a vision of integrated American power and is one of the State Department’s and USAID’s strongest advocates and champions.”

The vast gathering of ambassadors in Ben Franklin Room of the State Department burst into laughter as Clinton stated that after making his remarks, Mullen wanted to answer questions, adding, “And when he finishes his remarks, we’ll have the press leave so you can ask him anything.”

After getting showered by Clinton with eulogies, Mullen took the lead to return the favor to the diplomatic community saying, “As someone who has spent over four decades in the military, I am very fond of saying that we don’t create policy; we execute policy. And policy has the lead, and you are at the fore in that regard.”

Mullen also addressed the thorny subject of budget as he felt that, “We have got to get the State Department budget right.”

Noting that there was a shortfall of money there, Mullen said, “We took too much money away. And when you take money away from the State Department, more than anything else, you take people away. Because in our terms, people are your main battery, your main effort.”

“And so having a robust enough budget to be able to meet the needs of our times is absolutely mandatory,” Mullen justified.

On the ongoing crisis in Egypt, Mullen said, “It hasn’t just been a $1.3 billion investment in Egypt over the last 30 years. It hasn’t been just dollars, and it hasn’t just been a military investment in their armed services, which have been a critical part.”

Calling it “an investment on the part of the United States that goes back actually a long way, even further back than 30 years,” Mullen suggested that the relationship dates back to pre-President Hosni Mubarak era.

Later addressing the diplomats, Clinton said, “Recent events in Egypt and certainly in that broader region, remind us all how crucial it is to have top-notch leadership on the ground, and how quickly that ground can shift under our feet.”

‘So whether your mission is large or small, whether you’re a political appointee or a career diplomat, you are all on the front lines of America’s engagement with a fast-changing world. And that’s why we think this conference is so important,” Clinton stated.

According to the State Department , the conference is aimed at discussing a report named the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR), which is compiled to outline long-term goals justifying budget proposals of the department to Congress,

                            We concur.

But even as we express our overall agreement with the IMF’s analysis, we should – as a matter of both principle and policy – do all we can as to further empower our people, and to see to it that, growth and development is powered from both the inside and outside.

Such an addition of an endogenous dimension of development to the current policy mix would go a long way to helping Bahamians help each other.

A double-barreled approach to national development would – of necessity – push leadership in the direction of seeing to it that our most precious resources – here namely our youth are put to the most productive use possible.

Our churches, unions, businesses, other civil society agencies – and the government are called to pull together in the interest not only of their membership, but in the interest of all to put the Bahamas on a path to sustainability.

Whether the reference made is to tourism, banking or the industrial sector, each and every one of these clearly ahs a stake in a vibrant, healthy, development-oriented Bahamas.

But just as clearly, we must break with business as usual.

Were we to do so, we would wake to find that, while things are tough, while moving forward, things might get even tougher; we are ever optimistic.

We are buoyant not only because we know that, this period of austerity is one where those who stick it out will reap their fair share of rewards, but also because it is precisely in times like these – that is to say, days of creative destruction – when you either sink or swim.

While these are days of tremendous struggle, we are convinced that, the worst is over; and that, in the fullness of time – better days will come.

But even as we note that these so-called better days are ahead, we know it for a fact that, we must – like others in the mix – do our level-best to help make some of these things happen.

The time is nigh for all of this nation’s right-thinking Bahamian sons and daughters to cease from their time-tested habit of sweating the small stuff; that is to say, their socially pernicious habit of making too much of the already too-little that divides them.

Happily, while this habit does persist – and might yet continue – this country continues to get kudos for the conservative manner given by all who govern to the economic affairs of this land that is ours.

Some of these kudos routinely come from world agencies such as the International Monetary Fund. In this regard, we now note some of what the IMF has had to say about the management of things in this period when austerity is the word that apparently matters most.

The team met with senior government officials and representatives of the private sector. At the end of the visit, Mr. Gene Leon, head of the IMF mission to the Bahamas, issued the following statement: “The global crisis of 2008-09 had a profound impact on the Bahamian economy. Tourist arrivals declined by 10 percent and foreign direct investment fell by over 30 percent, leading to a sharp contraction in domestic activity and a large rise in unemployment.

“However, lower import prices helped narrow the external current account deficit to about 12.5?percent of GDP; this together with external borrowing and the one-off allocation of Special Drawing Rights helped raise gross international reserves to about 2.5?months of imports, boosting support for the exchange rate peg…”

There was even more. “… Gross international reserves are projected to increase despite the higher oil prices owing to strong private capital inflows, including from Foreign Direct Investment…”

While this is not to be ranked at the optimal level, we do have some modest reason to be happy that ventures like Baha Mar are on stream.

And as Gene Leon aptly notes, “…Going forward, the authorities have indicated a commitment to maintain prudent macroeconomic policies, including fiscal measures to reduce the rising debt-to-GDP ratio and a monetary policy geared to supporting price stability and the US dollar peg… They also plan to continue withreforms to improve tax administration, increase fiscal responsibility, and transparency.”

Evidently, then, even if things were to turn out as suggested by the IMF; there would still be work that could and should be done by Bahamians.

Investment banks have cut pay a bit but shareholders are still getting a raw deal

IT IS a year since the investment-banking industry committed reputational suicide by paying bumper bonuses just a few months after the worst financial crisis in living memory. That move helped destroy investment bankers’ credibility with the public and many politicians. Outside finance, even red-blooded capitalists cringed in embarrassment. Bonuses were paid from profits buoyed by public subsidies—either directly through bail-outs or by central-bank interventions and implicit government guarantees. They also were paid at the expense of rebuilding capital buffers. In 2009 the typical firm’s wage bill was equivalent to between a quarter and half of its core capital. Investment banks, it seemed, were not being run in the interests of the economy or even of their owners, but for their staff. It was financial mutiny.

Now banks are once again working out how much they should pay their people. Amazingly since 2009 there have been no political keel-haulings, just a few whips of the lash. Faced with an angry public, some governments have agreed to tax banks’ borrowing to recoup some of the subsidy they get. Britain imposed a one-off tax on bonuses that should raise at least GBP2.5 billion ($4 billion), more than the GBP550m originally expected. America restricted pay at firms that still have TARP bail-out funds. …

When it comes to money market accounts and certificates of deposit (CD) type investments, there is not a whole lot of glamour. This may be for good reason, as they are certainly not the sexiest investments available today. However, they do play a very valuable role. Money market accounts and CD’s are for the most conservative of investors. When it comes to CD’s and money market accounts, preservation of capital is paramount. We will take a closer look at the roles these unsexy investments have.

Actually, money market accounts and CD accounts often play rather different roles. Most commonly, money market accounts, or money market funds fill the need for temporary investment. This allows active investors, the ability to utilize the money market accounts as short-term investment tools. Investors and traders alike, that buy and sell securities, often need a location for assets, when they are not utilized. This is very important, as traders are able to keep their money working for them, albeit at rather low interest rates. The CD type investment is more commonly connected with the conservative investor seeking safety. Certificates of deposit are insured by the FDIC, up to a limit of $100,000 per account. The downside to bank investing is that CDs often require that you lock up your money for a period of time, most commonly one to two years. This makes them less likely than their money market counterparts. As a trade-off, CDs, usually pay a higher yield, but that’s not always the case.

The money market fund, as the name implies has the advantages of a mutual fund, in that it typically invests in several different banks, such as CDs, debt or bond obligations, or U.S. Treasury securities. This can result in a little bit higher return, when compared to its typical certificate of deposit, but does not offer the security that comes from FDIC protection. It’s important to note that money market accounts are often categorized as conservative investments, but they don’t share any government protection. Also, the big complaint associated with the bank investments is that much of the low return is lost to taxation and inflation. There are money market funds that offer tax-free returns. These tax-free advantages to money market funds are invested in municipal type bonds, which offer federal and tax-free advantages. They do not, however, typically pay is high as their taxable counterparts.

Traditionally, if you wanted to start a CD, you would go down to your local bank branch and set up a certificate of deposit. Since your local branch didn’t have much competition, you wouldn’t always get the best CD rates. The Internet has changed all of that. By doing a simple search online, you can find the high certificate of deposit rates, as well as attractive money market account rates. Sites like bankrate.com compare hundreds of the best CD rates throughout the nation, allowing you to find a much more attractive rate than you would have, even 10 years ago. In fact, there are many websites, just like Bank Rate that offer similar services, with the goal of finding you the best CD rates. It pays to check out a few of these services before finding an account to go with, as it is not at all uncommon to find better rates elsewhere. The important thing is to utilize the tools that are now available to us. In addition to finding the top account rate, FDIC protection is also important. Also, it’s always a good idea to go with a respected institution, as they are less likely to play games when it comes to withdrawing your funds.

If you’re looking for the best CD rates you can visit the site for a list of resources. For more on how money market funds work you can get more details on that as well. http://www.themoneyalert.com/savingsrates.html

For people who want to invest in a certificate of deposit (CD), there are two ways by which they can do so, which is to go to a bank or a credit union. Between the two, sources of certificates of deposit, the bank has been traditionally the preferred option, as they are perceived to be more stable financial institutions. However, in recent years, people who are looking to invest in CD?s are giving credit unions a second look due to a number of reasons, which have made investing in CD?s through credit unions seem a better option. Given this, it can be expected that more and more people may opt to invest in CD?s through a credit union in the near future.

Some reasons why credit unions are better

One of the biggest reasons why some people prefer investing in CD’s through a credit union is that usually, credit unions offer higher interest rates on the CD’s they offer as compared to the CD’s provided by banks. In most cases, the interest rates that credit unions offer is at least half a percent higher than the interest rates that banks provide. The reason why credit unions can provide higher interest rates is that because credit unions are cooperative institutions, which means that earnings are returned to members in the form of higher savings rates. In addition to this, given that credit unions are non-profit institutions, they do not have to worry about returning profits to external shareholders unlike banks who have to return profits to their shareholders, which means running and maintaining a credit union is cheaper.

Another reason why some people prefer credit unions is because they offer more affordable CD products because the minimum amount that they require are sometimes lower than what banks require from investors. In addition to this, credit unions also offer CD products that have very short maturity periods that still provide decent returns.

Traditionally, people who want to invest in CD’s opt to go to banks because of the perception that banks are more stable institutions. However, people are now slowly realizing that credit unions can provide them with a better deal with CD products. This is because apart from the fact that credit unions provide higher interest rates, the fact that maintaining a credit union is cheaper, they can also provide the stability that banks offer.

Car financing has been around for almost as long as cars have been around. Nearly everyone in the world has to buy a car with finance since few people have enough available capital to buy a car in cash. In most cases however, it is also preferable for even someone who can afford to buy a car to finance the vehicle. There are several advantages which financing gains for someone.

One of the most important advantages of financing a vehicle, especially when an extremely low interest rate is an option, is the money it can save you. There are situations where it will not have any ability to save a person any money, especially if the vehicle is fairly inexpensive or the person is unable to obtain a good interest rate.

For people who are able to obtain a low interest rate, or even no interest rate in some circumstances, financing a car is a great option because it allows them to keep their money for the length of the loan term. If they are able to place their money in any form of interest bearing account or investment which earns a higher APR or annual percentage rate than what they are paying on their vehicle then they actually stand to come out slightly ahead.

Another major advantage of buying a car with finance is related to the dealership. Dealerships are designed to make a profit so they will generally look for any method they can possibly find to make a profit. One area that many dealerships make a profit is on the financing of the vehicle. In most cases the dealership itself is not extending the financing but they usually receive a kickback from the financing company as a reward for selling the financing. This benefits the dealership and also the car buyer.

Typically, a dealership will be relatively unwilling to work with a buyer who is looking to pay for the car in full. This is due to the fact that in most cases very little profit margin is actually built in to the cost of the vehicle so they need to sell it for the ticket price in order to make any form of profit.

When you are looking to buy a vehicle with financing they are often far more willing to work with you on the price of the vehicle, or even the amount they are willing to offer you to buy off your old vehicle. This is due to the fact that they will be able to make profit through the financing instead of strictly through the vehicle. In many cases the amount of money you will pay in interest over the course of the loan will be little, if any, more than the amount of extra money you will pay to buy the vehicle in cash.

There are some limited circumstances where it is not advantageous to buy a car with finance. One of the first, and most important steps you can take when you are considering purchasing a new car is to weight all the different options you have available to you to pay for the vehicle to determine which one will offer you the lowest price over the long run. This will ensure that you receive the best possible deal when buying a car.

Are you new to investing? If so, you have taken a big step towards making a lot of money. If you use this opportunity right, you can get yourself into a very good place. You can increase your wealth exponentially over time and stabilize your financial security. This means being able to afford the things you want and love and live a much less stressful life.

As a first time investor, what are the best investments? It’s hard to say that there is a better investment for one person to another. There is no overall best investment. If there is one investment that was the best it would have no risk and could make you a ton of money. If that investment existed, that’s where everyone would invest and nowhere else. That investment does not exist.

The best investment is the one that is going to make you the most money with the least risk. This will be different from person to person. First of all, how old are you? If you are in your 20s, you have the chance to take on a lot of risk and make a lot of money. If you’re in your 50s, you are probably very close to retirement and do not want to lose any money.

As a first-time investor, you are a beginner. You probably don’t know much about investing and once make sure you are doing the right thing. The best investment for you is the one that you understand the most and feel the most confident with. First, a look at your age and decide what a good investment for you would be risk-wise. If you are a beginner and you are in your 50s, you will want to do something that is a little less risky such as bonds or conservative mutual funds. If you are in your 20s, you want more risk and may want to look more towards stocks.

Then, all you have to do is learn all you can about the investment that you chose and invest as much money and as you can. The more you work towards in the more you invest, the more money you will make, no matter how much risk you take on. Of course, you will probably make more money with more risk, but you need to make sure you are able and willing to take that risk.
